Son freed from detention reunites with family on Mother's Day

Francisco, a 26-year-old who was granted asylum twice and remained detained in a rural Wisconsin jail, was finally freed and reunited with his family last weekend, surprising his mother on Mother's Day. NIJC filed a lawsuit last month seeking his release. Read the story in the Chicago Sun-Times and see the beautiful photo of Francisco reuniting with his mom.

 

COVID-19 positive in custody: Gustavo’s story

Gustavo described to his NIJC attorney what it's like to have COVID-19 while trapped in immigration jail and his story is very disturbing. Gustavo is detained at the Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego, California, where the first person to die of COVID-19 in detention was detained. Read Gustavo's story.
