John,
This week on CNN, avowed Christian nationalist and MAGA extremist Ryan Girdusky made an ominous threat to journalist Mehdi Hasan, warning him “I hope your beeper doesn’t go off” after Hasan said he supports the Palestinian cause.
The other guests immediately fired back in defense of Hasan; the host apologized and CNN issued a statement that Girdusky is no longer welcome on their network.
What shocked me about this exchange was not the brazenness of Girdusky’s obvious Islamophobia, but the fact he faced swift accountability – from the guests, the host, CNN, and the internet writ large.
Anti-Muslim hatred has been so normalized in our society that accountability is the exception, not the norm.
It is for this reason that we should pay close attention to the financial and political alliances of our elected representatives.
One of the biggest current contributors to Islamophobia in the US is AIPAC, which has relentlessly used Islamaphobic narratives to justify the ongoing genocide in Gaza. Their efforts to target and silence Congressional representatives who support an arms embargo against Israel and a permanent ceasefire rely upon fomenting fear and hatred in the hopes of driving a wedge between Jewish and Muslim voters.
We must reject the notion that the liberation of any oppressed people comes at the expense or subjugation of another. And we must reject the influence of any organization that promotes that kind of policy. We know our collective safety is intertwined and dependent upon one another.
Let me be clear: Jimmy Gomez, by accepting AIPAC money and allowing its electoral wing to flood this district with dishonest smears against our campaign, betrays any claim to progressive values.
When hate-filled rhetoric gets normalized on national television, it becomes all the more important to reject the influence of organizations that feed these divisions.
For me, that means standing up against the right-wing agenda of AIPAC, even as they pour MILLIONS into opposing my campaign and backing my opponent.
If you’re ready to see a change in leadership that condemns hate and upholds real justice, contribute today to help us reach voters with this message.
This hostility isn’t surprising when you consider AIPAC’s funding sources: MAGA-aligned, ultra-wealthy right-wing donors.
These backers are not only comfortable with Girdusky’s remark, but they’re also content with the racist and xenophobic atmosphere of Trump’s Madison Square Garden rally and the genocidal agenda of Israel’s far-right government toward Palestinians.
It’s clear that these donors are not interested in peace or equality; they’re interested in power, fear-mongering, and preserving the status quo.
It’s an insult to the real progressive movement and to every person in CA-34 who believes in integrity and human rights.
My commitment is simple: I will never take AIPAC’s money. I will not answer to those who seek to pit communities against each other.
Instead, I’m running to represent all of us – those who want justice, equality, and an end to policies rooted in hate and division.
This moment is about rejecting a future shaped by bigoted, corporate-backed agendas. My support comes from our community, and from organizations working towards a vision of collective safety and freedom.
Jewish Voices for Peace Action (JVP Action) has recently endorsed our campaign, recognizing our unwavering commitment to justice, peace, and a people-first agenda.
JVP Action fights for Jewish safety worldwide by promoting solidarity across communities and standing against the misuse of political influence to fuel division and harm.
I am also proud to be endorsed by Jewish organizations like If Not Now Los Angeles and Muslim organizations like Emgage Action, both of which are devoted to ending the cycle of hatred and bigotry which has divided us for too long.
Together, we’re building a platform that celebrates diversity, ensures that every voice is heard, and confronts the hate-fueled agendas that undermine true progress.
Help us build a campaign that stands for truth, dignity, and accountability. Your support today will ensure that our movement prevails against the powerful special interests trying to silence us.
It’s time for us,
David Kim
PS: We are down to the final 5 days of this campaign and our message is breaking through. Can you pitch in now, whether it’s $5 or $50, to help us talk to EVERY voter before November 5th?
