John.
For decades now, Americans have become increasingly skeptical of our politicians. The distrust has become so deeply embedded in our culture, that we expect our leaders to lie; we even make voting strategies based on it.
But how did we get here?
With each passing generation, politicians have chosen to protect corporations over their constituents. In order to move forward, we need to believe in a new kind of politics, one that truly puts #PeopleFirst.
The bad news: Unions, not corporations, built the American middle class. But today, generations of Americans are going their entire lives without the opportunity to join a union. Our federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, a number that hasn’t changed one penny since 2009. The reality is, no one can survive working full-time on a minimum wage job.
The good news: There’s a new wave of union organizing that has pushed a $15 living wage to the forefront of policy conversations. More and more Americans support the increase, and other innovative economic ideas such as a Universal Basic Income. Even in a purple state like Missouri, we voted overwhelmingly to increase minimum wage. If we organize hard enough, we can and will change the status quo.
I know firsthand what it’s like to be unhoused and I know what it means to be undervalued and underpaid in the workplace. I fought my way out of homelessness and I’ll fight just as hard for a living wage for all.
If we want leaders who care about OUR interests—not special interests—we need to elect ourselves. That’s why I’m running to be your champion in Congress. Together, we will get there!
