Democrat,
Governor Phil Murphy has continued to provide steady, compassionate leadership throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Thanks to that effort, and especially the heroic work of our first responders, health care workers and more, we are now seeing a sustained reduction in key metrics like new positive tests, hospitalizations, ventilator usage and more. These developments are clearing the way toward getting more of our state open and returning the sense of normalcy we all desperately want, and today Governor Murphy outlined two of the next crucial steps down the Road Back.

Expanding our testing capacity has long been a major focus for state, county and local governments across New Jersey. In Governor Murphy’s Road Back guidelines for reopening our state, he called for doubling the current testing capacity. We are now well on our way to meeting that goal, with a current projection of a 20,000 test per day capacity by the end of May. Testing is now being offered at 135 public and private sites throughout the state, and many sites are testing both symptomatic and asymptomatic residents. You can see a comprehensive list of testing sites here. [[link removed]]
While testing is crucial, it is not enough without a robust contact tracing program. The Governor announced plans today to dramatically increase the number of contact tracing workers in the state, with a goal of hiring 1,000 more. Additionally, Governor Murphy and the State Health Department will embark on a regional approach to testing with more coordination with municipal and county governments, partnerships with Rutgers and other public colleges and improved communication and data reporting technologies. We all want to put this crisis behind us, and these two major steps will help us get there. While some Trenton politicians are making irresponsible demands of the Governor based only on politics, the people of New Jersey clearly trust Phil Murphy -- today another poll showed that 67% of residents think that he is reopening our state at just the right pace.
