Back in April, I pressed Attorney General Merrick Garland on whether the Department of Justice (DOJ) would prosecute non-citizens who vote in our federal elections. At the time, he claimed the Department would investigate and hold anyone involved in violating federal voting laws accountable. Now, the Biden-Harris DOJ is changing its tune.
As you may know, the DOJ recently sued the State of Virginia in response to Governor Glenn Youngkin’s work to remove non-citizens from its voter rolls. In an effort to ensure only U.S. citizens vote in our elections, Virginia recently removed more than 6,000 non-citizens. Yet between the DOJ and a Biden-appointed federal district judge, the Left is working to restore over 1,600 individuals who were taken off the State’s voter registration list during the 90-day window before the election. Youngkin and his Attorney General, who fairly argue that Virginia is simply enforcing a State law signed by former Democrat Governor Tim Kaine in 2006, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Thankfully, the Supreme Court granted Virginia’s emergency stay to keep these non-citizens off its voter rolls.
I’m grateful that our constitutionalists on the Supreme Court stepped in to protect the integrity of our elections. Yet this entire saga is a powerful reminder of why my conservative colleagues and I fought so hard for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This critical legislation would have established clear, nationwide standards to ensure only Americans vote in American elections. Specifically, the SAVE Act would require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration and instruct states to establish programs to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls. Radical Democrats repeatedly claimed this bill was unnecessary since non-citizens aren’t registered to vote. Now, they’re actively fighting to greenlight thousands of non-citizens to vote in the most important election in our nation’s history.
Folks, election integrity isn’t partisan; it’s the foundation of our Republic. I’m incredibly proud of the work the Peach State has done to make it easier to vote and harder to cheat, and I have faith that this principle will supersede the Left’s deceitful tactics.
