Dear Friends,
As your Member of Congress, I take seriously my responsibility to protect our next generation’s future. From championing policies to fight the climate crisis, to working to eliminate crushing student debt, I’m committed to fighting for you in Washington. To that end, I’ve been working on legislation that prioritizes the well-being of our children and communities.
Recently, I introduced the Children's Health Protection Act, legislation to codify into law the only office within the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) dedicated to children's health, the Office of Children's Health Protection. This act will ensure that no future President will be able to remove the safeguards that help shield children from environmental harms to their health.
I’m also working to end the use of Atrazine, an endocrine-disrupting pesticide that is already banned in 44 nations worldwide. I introduced the Ban Atrazine Toxicants Act to protect the health of American families, our environment, and wildlife to help the U.S. make a crucial transition from atrazine to safer and more sustainable practices. Atrazine is commonly detected in drinking water from agricultural runoff and water utilities serving over 40 million Americans, making its links to cancer and reproductive harm incredibly troubling.
This builds on my work to protect our environment through my Polluters Pay Climate Fund Act to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable for the damage it has inflicted on our planet. This bill requires the largest U.S. based fossil fuel extractors to pay into a $1 trillion Polluters Pay Climate Fund. Now is the time for Congress to ensure that the top polluting companies are held accountable and required to pay their fair share to cover the costs of addressing the climate crisis, not taxpayers.
I’m also working to ensure a strong financial foundation for our next generation. Millions of Americans are being held back by crushing student debt—debt that is no longer dischargeable in bankruptcy. While bankruptcy is a last resort option, I reintroduced the Student Borrower Bankruptcy Relief Act to empower borrowers to discharge their student loans in bankruptcy, giving those in need the opportunity for a fresh start.
