Investments in clean energy are increasing with changes in consumer behavior. With those changes, investments in the fossil fuel industry are not the safe bets they once were. In fact, they are becoming significant financial liabilities, particularly for vulnerable populations like retirees. To prevent this issue, it is important that the State of Illinois follows in the footsteps of New York and Maine in protecting pension funds and granting more transparency to the holders. Here is your chance to make an impact. Sign the petition and we will deliver it to your legislators: Support the Illinois Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign
Further Background:
The Fossil Fuel Divestment Act HB 3037 (introduced by Rep. Will Guzzardi in the House) and SB 3717 (introduced by Sen. Adriane Johnson in the Senate), would require:
- The State’s public pensions to divest from the fossil fuel industry;
- The adoption of written investment policies by pension boards of trustees to align with this Act; any updates to the policies must align with the Act, also;
- Review of pension system assets to identify those related to the fossil fuel industry;
- Quarterly public postings regarding pension fund holdings; and
- Annual reports on the environmental impacts of the pension system’s investments.
The Illinois Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign has the support of 350 Chicago, TH!RD Act Illinois, The Climate Reality Project Chicago Metro Chapter, the Illinois Environmental Council, and many other climate and environmental groups.
In solidarity,
Team 350 Chicago
