BC NDP to Form Government
CHBA BC
After a long week of nail-biting recounts, British Columbia's Lieutenant Governor, Janet Austin, invited Premier David Eby to form government on Monday. Following the final vote count, the BC NDP has narrowly secured a majority with 47 seats, while the BC Conservatives closely trail with 44 seats, and the BC Green Party holds two seats.
Due to slim margins, automatic judicial recounts will be held in the Kelowna Centre and Surrey-Guildford ridings within the next few weeks. As we await those results, Premier Eby has outlined his intention to prepare for a fall Legislative session, likely in November or December, depending on the timeline of judicial recounts, to advance two immediate priorities: forming a new Cabinet and electing a Speaker. With several former Cabinet members either losing their seats or stepping down, we will closely monitor announcements regarding these appointments. Given the narrow majority, electing a Speaker will also be critical, and the Premier has signalled he is not ruling out the possibility of a Speaker from the other two parties.
CHBA BC looks forward to engaging with the new government and official opposition to foster relationships with both new and returning MLAs as we continue to advocate for our key policy priorities.

CHBA Encouraged by Conservative Party Proposal to Remove GST On New Homes
CHBA
Canada's federal political parties continue to build their pre-election platforms, and this week, the Conservative Party of Canada pledged to remove GST on new homes sold for under $1 million if they were elected.
To pay for this policy, the Conservatives propose removing some current federal infrastructure spending, which is conditional on municipalities improving their policies and processes.
CHBA has been advocating for years with all major parties for a change to GST rebate thresholds, which has been a major contributor to affordability challenges when buying a home. The current GST rebate is gradually phased out for homes valued up to $450,000, and no rebate is available for homes valued above that amount.

Request for Expressions of Interest in Summerland
District of Summerland
The District of Summerland recently published a Request for Expressions of Interest to gather feedback from developers who would be interested in purchasing an 11.6-acre parcel of land to build a highly sustainable mixed-density residential development or a portion thereof. The District's concept plan for this development presents a sustainability-focused "Eco-Village" that would create approximately 150 residential units through cluster single family/duplex housing, hillside townhouses and pocket apartment buildings, all built alongside parkland with direct access to the premier "Test of Humanity" mountain biking trail system and the District's Solar Energy Centre. The RFEOI can be viewed on the District's bids and tenders page here. Responses are due by November 26th at 2:00 p.m.

Carbon Monoxide Awareness
Technical Safety BC
Winter calls for colder temperatures, and that means that many British Columbians will be firing up their gas appliances to stay cozy and warm. However, if these appliances are not regularly maintained by a licensed professional, carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning can be a considerable risk.
Technical Safety BC's latest campaign seeks to educate the public about the symptoms and risks associated with CO, which currently ranks as the highest risk on their risk register. CO poisoning may occur when fuels are incompletely burnt, and the products of this combustion are led into an inhabited space due to poor venting installations or broken appliance components. It can and can cause serious illness or even death. Technical Safety BC recommends having gas appliances serviced regularly and installing a CO alarm on each floor.
You can help educate British Columbians by sharing with your network and encouraging them to Find a Licensed Contractor and learn more about how they can safeguard their homes against the risk of CO poisoning this winter.
