Hastings on the Hill
New project will inform policy on AI and health.

Artificial intelligence is changing the landscape of health care delivery and biomedical research, but policymakers lament the paucity of accessible–and urgently needed–advice and evidence to make informed responsible decisions. To close this gap, The Hastings Center is launching “Hastings on the Hill: Informing Policy on AI in Health,” a project funded by the Greenwall Foundation to translate bioethics research on AI in health for use by policymakers. #Election2024: Aging, Health Care, Climate Change
Hastings scholars and collaborators publish commentaries.

After the Election, Our Aging Society will Still Need Care Policy. “After the election, the care needs of our aging society will continue to be met by families showing up, day after day,” writes Hastings Center senior research scholar Nancy Berlinger in Hastings Bioethics Forum. “Whether or not our public officials decide to imagine otherwise and commit themselves to policy changes that could prove highly popular, bioethics needs to keep its eyes on the caregivers.”

Do Your Part to Address Climate Change: Vote. “Any hope of containing the damage of industrial emissions production requires us to elect leaders at all levels [including government, company boards, and school boards] who value emissions reduction and voting against those who discount, greenwash, or oppose it,” writes Cheryl Macpherson, the principal investigator of the CREEi-Hastings Center Climate Bioethics Program, in Hastings Bioethics Forum.

The Reactionary Recommendations of Project 2025: Why Bioethicists Should Care. “Project 2025 has far-reaching implications for the work of bioethics,” write Hastings Center fellow Bruce Jennings and research scholar Virginia A. Brown in Hastings Bioethics Forum. “The call to dismantle the administrative state not only impacts health and health care, it also seeks to undermine the trust that we have in government and policymaking."

Medicine Must Plan to Protect Immigrant Patients and Their Families. Hastings Center fellow Mark Kuczewski and coauthor Altaf Saadi call on health professionals to prepare for the possibility of more aggressive federal policies on immigration. “Health care systems and the medical profession should prepare now to avoid being coerced into compromising patient care and the values of the profession,” they write in JAMA Internal Medicine.

Bioethics Rediscovered
Ravitsky envisions an inclusive field that builds bridges.

Bioethics must rethink itself, said Hastings Center President Vardit Ravitsky in a keynote address recently at the 25th anniversary  event of the DRZE, a leading German center for ethics in the biomedical sciences. Bioethics should expand its vision from human health to human flourishing, prioritize issues related to population and global health, and focus on how to enhance its social impact. Watch the talk.
