Dear John,

Election Day is just five days away, and we’re here to explain why we won’t have the official election results on election night, and why election officials need time to do their jobs safely. Visit our new blog linked here to learn more.

I’ve worked in my local election office in Ohio, and my colleague Lamontae Shively hails from his elections office in Kentucky. Watch a quick video message from us about what’s going on:
Verified Voting’s Jessica King (Senior Policy Associate) and Lamontae Shively (Research & Outreach Associate) discuss what happens after Election Day.

An election official’s job is not over on election night, and the results are considered official only when standard procedures are complete. Your local election team has to process and count all eligible ballots (including mail and early voting ballots, provisional ballots, and ballots from military and overseas voters). Then, they often check the vote count by conducting post-election audits, and in some cases, recounts.

The strength of our democracy rests on every valid ballot being counted, and election officials need time to do their jobs. Our team will be here to guide you through Election Day and the post-election period as we work with the Election Protection 866-Our-Vote hotline, share our nonpartisan information and resources, sort election facts from disinformation, and work directly with election officials in the field.

Please consider supporting our crucial work today. Thanks to a generous donor, all gifts made to Verified Voting right now will be tripled in value to sustain and bolster the work we’re doing this year.

With gratitude,
Jessica King, Senior Policy Associate
