The Law Foundation, with a coalition of partners, has successfully settled a class action lawsuit against the City of San Diego on behalf of unhoused residents living in their vehicles. Protecting people and families in San Diego sets a precedent that helps protect people living in their vehicles anywhere, including Silicon Valley. “We are proud to have reached an agreement that not only provides meaningful relief to those affected but also sets a powerful precedent for other cities to follow,” said Tristia Bauman, Directing Attorney at the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley. “This settlement is a significant step forward in our ongoing efforts to protect the rights and dignity of vulnerable populations, ensuring that unhoused individuals receive the support and respect they deserve. It represents a crucial move towards systemic change, addressing the root causes of inequity and fostering a more just society.” Read the full press release: lawfoundation.org/news Empowering Low-Income Tenants in San Jose Tenants at Summerwinds apartments in San Jose have been struggling to get necessary repairs to their units for over 10 years, with no real solution from the property owner. The Law Foundation worked alongside tenants to form a tenant association and advocate for better living conditions. In spite of facing discrimination, safety concerns, and poor pest control, the association continues to push for change. Last week, we rallied for management to meet with tenants and address their demands. The Law Foundation helps low-income renters stand up for their rights and build power in their communities. Organizing tenant associations creates benefits for everyone by improving health and safety outcomes for our neighbors, which leads to healthy and safe communities – all while reducing public costs in our emergency services systems. Celebrating Native American Heritage Month This Friday, November 1st, marks the beginning of Native American Heritage Month, a time dedicated to honoring, learning from, and celebrating the rich history, enduring cultures, and invaluable contributions of Native American communities. In the Bay Area, we recognize the Ohlone people, including the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, as the original and continuing stewards of the land now known as Santa Clara County, where the Law Foundation is located. The Muwekma Ohlone Tribe, alongside other Indigenous communities, has maintained deep cultural ties to these lands despite the lasting impacts of colonization. Acknowledging this history reinforces our shared responsibility to honor and respect Indigenous legacies. This month provides a valuable opportunity to deepen our understanding and appreciation of Native cultures.
