Dear Friends of 5 Gyres,

Forget ghosts, witches, and werewolves! The scariest thing this Halloween is a ghoulish contaminant we can’t see - microplastics.

Microfibers, which shed from clothes, carpets, and home goods, are making their way into the air we breathe and the water we drink, increasingly being discovered in the human body. Even dolphins aren’t safe from this invisible threat lurking in the air! Scary, right?

But instead of running away screaming, you can breathe easy knowing that 5 Gyres has a plan to reduce microfiber pollution through research, advocacy, and collaborative partnerships.

In 2025 we will:

  • Publish research on the efficacy of microfiber-capture devices in dryers

  • Study airborne microfiber release and transport from carpets and home textiles

  • Lead advocacy efforts for legislation to require microfiber filtration in new washing machines

  • Work with brands to create lasting and measurable change through science-backed solutions

Your support is critical as we literally shine a light (via microscopes!) on these tiny terrors and work toward upstream solutions that protect the environment and safeguard human health.

Deep breaths everyone, we’ve got you.

Dr. Lisa Erdle

Director of Science & Innovation
