In the midst of a public health crisis, postal workers have put their health and safety on the line every day to ensure Americans continue to receive the prescription medications, Social Security benefits, supplies, and mail they rely on.
The work of U.S. Postal Service (USPS) employees has never been more critical, but this pandemic has hit the agency particularly hard. The USPS is on track to run out of money in just a matter of months, and President Trump has refused to provide relief -- even threatening to veto any legislation that includes emergency funding for the agency.
Let's be clear, the USPS financial struggles are real, but are a consequence of a ridiculous requirement that they pre-fund retirement benefits for their employees, something no other agency has to do. Without that requirement, the USPS would be financially sound and self-sustaining.
Now President Trump has chosen one of his major donors to be the next Postmaster General, and we should all be concerned that he will deliver on President Trump's desire to cripple the Postal Service.

But President Trump has repeatedly refused to help the USPS -- he even called the agency "a joke." It's not a joke for the 600,000 postal service employees who could lose their jobs. And it's not a joke for the millions of people who could lose the service they rely on.
