These OB-GYNs are running for Congress to protect abortion |
Nineteen physicians currently serve in Congress — 15 in the House, four in the Senate. Only three are women. The only OB-GYNs — Reps. Michael Burgess of Texas and Roger Marshall of Kansas — are Republicans who oppose abortion. Pro-choice OB-GYNs Dr. Kelly Morrison in Minnesota and Dr. Kristin Lyerly in Wisconsin are running to change that.
Morrison said that the 2016 election of Donald Trump “thrust me into a different brain space.” Before launching her congressional campaign, she was serving in the state Senate after two terms in Minnesota’s House.
“He ran on appointing justices to the court that would overturn Roe v. Wade, and so I knew what the implications of his election would mean for reproductive health care and for women’s health, and it was terrifying to me, so it it pushed me into a place where I made a pretty drastic change in my life to run for office so that I could be part of an effort to protect reproductive health care here in Minnesota,” Morrison added. |

Commentary: OB-GYNs on the truth about abortion later in pregnancy |
As OB-GYN physicians in Minnesota, we are relieved and hopeful to see elected officials and candidates at every level working to preserve access to reproductive health care.
We know, however, that it can be difficult for citizens and lawmakers alike who do not have direct experience with high-risk pregnancy care to understand and articulate the nuances of the sometimes complicated conversation surrounding abortion later in pregnancy.
When we hear repeated statements on this topic filled with misconstrued characterizations designed to shock and manipulate voters, we, as experts in the field, recognize that our voices are needed to explain why abortion access cannot be restricted by stage of pregnancy and why the argument for gestational age limits is dangerous to patients. |
