Hi, it’s Tara, Tim Kaine’s Virginia Finance Director.
I want to wish everyone a very happy Halloween… except Hung Cao — who I have a bone to pick with today. Here’s why:
In an interview this election cycle, Hung Cao discussed witchcraft (really) and said — with a fully straight face: “ We can’t let that happen in Virginia .”

First of all, this isn’t a thing.
And more importantly, witchcraft is the LEAST of our worries when we have the very real threat of Republican extremists winning on November 5th. (Does anyone have a spell to secure affordable health care, a secure democracy, and reproductive freedom? Asking for a friend.)
With Election Day just five days away , I have to ask: Will you contribute to our campaign here in Virginia to defeat Hung Cao, re-elect Tim Kaine, and send Kamala Harris to the White House — so we can focus on what really matters? [[link removed]]

Look, it’s not lost on me how much Cao’s comments harken back to a time when society literally burned women at the stake. When zealots — including here in Virginia — accused women of performing witchcraft (often women who were healers and midwives!) and then tried thousands of women to be killed or demonized and cast out.
(By the way: as Governor, Tim Kaine actually pardoned the only Virginian who was convicted of witchcraft, Grace Sherwood, nearly 300 years after her trial.)
Just look at who Cao aligns himself with: JD Vance, Donald Trump, and extremists who are right now trying to control women’s bodies and reproductive freedoms, and even surveil pregnancies and private medical records (that’s a real part of Project 2025 — google it).
See the parallels?!
This Halloween, what should terrify us is not Wicca. It is the threat of Republican candidates who compare essential health care to the Holocaust (Cao), who want to put in place a national abortion ban and interstate travel ban (Vance), and who believe that women and girls who get abortions should be punished (Trump).
Extreme candidates like Hung Cao, JD Vance, and Donald Trump want to control and demonize women for their reproductive choices – and the policies they support are quite literally killing women in red states around the country.
There may not be a growing coven of witches here in Virginia, but there are hundreds of thousands of women who are angry that we’re still fighting to protect reproductive freedoms and bodily autonomy in 2024 – and we’re ready to cast our ballots for leaders like Tim Kaine and Kamala Harris on November 5th.
Please, this Halloween, will you chip in any amount to help us defeat extremists like Hung Cao, JD Vance, and Donald Trump and send a message that we’re not going back? [[link removed]]
Thanks so much,
-Tara
