October 2024
Outright International Monthly Newsletter

As we move through the final months of 2024, the fight for global LGBTIQ equality and inclusion continues with renewed strength. This month’s edition highlights groundbreaking efforts across the globe, celebrating achievements and shining a light on ongoing challenges in our community.

From advocating for the full inclusion of trans, gender-diverse, and intersex athletes in sports ([link removed]) , to major strides in LBQ advocacy ([link removed]) and a call for urgent support of Chinese LGBTQ activists ([link removed]) facing mounting pressure—these stories underscore the critical work ahead. Plus, Outright’s Executive Director, Maria Sjödin, took the stage at the Global Citizen Festival ([link removed]) alongside Former Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, amplifying the fight for LGBTIQ human rights with the support of major partners like Adobe Foundation.

And don't forget—OutSummit 2024 ([link removed]) is just around the corner! Secure your virtual seat ([link removed]) to join activists, policymakers, and advocates as we unite to strategize for a more equitable future.

Advocating for Inclusive Participation in Sport ([link removed])
[link removed]
Outright’s law and policy team, Intersex Program, and Trans Program joined forces to vociferously condemn efforts to exclude intersex, trans, and gender-diverse women from sports, arguing instead in favor of a model of inclusion based on the Olympic Charter’s fundamental principle that “The practice of sport is a human right,” in a commentary entitled “In the Contest Over Sports as a Human Right, Will Inclusion or Exclusion Prevail?” ([link removed]) We pointed out that the misrepresentation of diverse women as a threat not only diverts from real concerns: it also contributes to violence. In contrast, when women athletes, in all their diversity, thrive on a global stage, all of us benefit. We used the commentary to help amplify a global sign-on statement, "Trans, Gender Diverse and Intersex Inclusion in Sports is a Human Right,"
([link removed]) which is a powerful call to action for the full inclusion of all individuals in sports, promoting fairness and respect for human rights.
A Milestone in International LBQ Advocacy Efforts ([link removed])
[link removed]
LBQ activists, in collaboration with Outright International, ILGA World, and the Global Lesbian* Coalition, have launched a groundbreaking summary report outlining global advocacy and research priorities. This document is the result of consultations involving nearly 200 LBQ activists from around the world. It aims to guide activists seeking to prioritize LBQ issues in their international advocacy efforts. The document addresses pressing issues such as economic and climate justice, gender-based violence, access to health, and United Nations mechanisms while featuring a living bibliography of LBQ research. This initiative advances the global fight for the rights and equality of LBQ people, enables cross-regional advocacy connections, and equips LBQ advocates with tools to co-create a more inclusive, equitable, and feminist future. Urgent Support Needed for Chinese LGBTQ Activists! ([link removed])
[link removed]

Outright International’s Asia Program launched the report “You Are on Our List: Urgent Support Needed for Chinese LGBTQ Activists at Risk.” ([link removed]) This report, based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with 16 Chinese LGBTQ activists, provides a comprehensive overview of the deteriorating human rights situation for queer people and LGBTQ activists in China. The report gives you access to the dynamic and complex terrain of activism for the rights of LGBTQ people in China, tracing a journey from milestones like depathologization and decriminalization to the present-day government-imposed hurdles along the path toward societal inclusion and equal rights.

During the event, Maria announced an exciting pledge from Adobe Foundation to support Outright’s vital work in global research, movement resourcing, and advocacy.
