The November 2 Pontifical Requiem
Mass is the older, traditional, Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite
that has been celebrated for centuries.
Here are some interesting
facts:
~ Only a Bishop, Archbishop,
Cardinal or Pope can celebrate a Pontifical Requiem Mass.
~ Cardinal Burke will process in
the sanctuary wearing a surplice and his religious clothing as a
Cardinal, not yet fully vested for Holy Mass. A Cardinal's red skull
cap will be worn and not a bishop's mitre.
~ Vesting will take place during
the Holy Mass. Black vestments will be worn.
~ His Eminence’s hands will be
ceremonially washed by four clerics. Gloves will cover his
hands.
~ When Cardinal Burke will be
sitting and preaching, he will be on a chair called a “faldstool”
which will be placed in the middle of the sanctuary.
~ A Master of Ceremonies, clerics,
deacons, subdeacons and altar boys will be present.
~ An orchestra will accompany the Mass using Requiem compositions
by Gabriel Faure.
~ A catafalque will be placed in
the sanctuary, not far from the altar. It is a platform which can
include an empty coffin or something that imitates the shape of a
coffin, usually draped with a black funeral pall. The catafalque is
the symbol of the deceased whose body is not present. It will be
flanked with six floor candelabras; three on each side. Cardinal Burke
will say or sing the absolutions over the catafalque as His Eminence
would over the body of the deceased.
If you have never assisted at a
Pontifical Requiem Mass, please mark your calendar to either attend in
person or view online, on November 2 at 1:00 PM Central Time.
