Dear John,

Today, Mercy For Animals released the fourth edition of the Canada Animal Welfare Scorecard

[link removed]

. The only report of its kind, it ranks 40 companies operating in Canada on their animal welfare performance. This includes food giants like Tim Hortons, Walmart, and Loblaws.

Animals in the Canadian food system endure extreme cruelty. Pregnant pigs languish in cramped crates, hens are restricted from fully spreading their wings, and chickens used for meat are condemned to suffer short, traumatic lives.

We can't let this remain the norm. Together, we're driving change in the food industry.

A single corporate animal welfare policy can reduce suffering for millions of animals each year. Thanks to pressure from advocates like you, 22 companies featured in the scorecard have reported progress since last year's editionβ€”some for the first time!

Many companies, including A&W Canada and Tim Hortons, are making progress. Others, like massive fast-food conglomerate MTY Group, are breaking promises by erasing previously published pledges. This is evident in their most recent sustainability reports.

Now more than ever, suffering birds and mother pigs urgently need us to hold corporations accountable.
