Dear Friends,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Rita Marker. Over the past decades when few were paying attention to the advances of assisted suicide and euthanasia globally, Rita embraced the need to advocate for older persons, those with disabilities and the vulnerable most at risk. She formed the Patients Rights Council which featured a website with the most voluminous information on the subject. When she wasn’t writing, Rita travelled extensively throughout the country and in Europe to speak and advocate. There probably wasn’t a corner of the USA untouched by Rita’s brilliance, oratory and advocacy. And her warm personality and humor.

Earlier this year, as Rita’s health was failing, the management of the Patients Rights Council assets was transferred to the Institute for Patients' Rights. It is an understatement to proclaim how honored we are to continue Rita’s work. A legend has fallen, but her legacy shines brightly. Rest in peace, dear Rita, knowing that the heart of your work lives on and inspires those left behind.

The Institute for Patients’ Rights is the 501(c)(3) sister organization to the Patients' Rights Action Fund. IPR conducts research, educates the public, and works to expand and implement tools of empowerment for older adults, people with disabilities, marginalized persons, and their families to combat policies and medical practices that devalue some people’s lives, putting them at greater risk of deadly harm.

PRAF is a leading national, non-partisan single-issue organization that protects the rights of patients, people with disabilities, older adults, and other historically underrepresented groups from deadly harm and discrimination inherent in assisted suicide laws.
