Dear John,
We are pleased to announce that Sulma Arias, Executive Director of People’s Action, and Ana Garcia-Ashley, Executive Director of Gamaliel, will headline the Friday, December 6, afternoon plenary at Gamaliel’s 5 th Biennial Race and Power in America Summit in Detroit. As you know, the theme of this year’s Summit, “A Pivotal Moment in Time: Resistance, Persistence, Insistence,” reflects our concern with the growing embrace of authoritarianism in this country and its inextricable link to an insidious racist agenda.

Sulma, Ana, and the leads of national organizing networks like Faith in Action, National Domestic Workers’ Alliance, Center Popular Democracy, and others began a movement two years ago—The National Organizing Networks Revival—focused on reclaiming the arts, attitudes, and disciplines of community-based organizing as the antidote to authoritarianism. (See white paper describing the Revival.)

The Friday plenary will provide us with the opportunity to frame our organizing plans and strategies over the next two years and to explore opportunities for building and/or deepening relationships with partner organizations! The following interview with DeJuan Bland, Lead Organizer, MOSES Michigan, at the Midwest Organizing Revival gathering in September, lays out the importance of having and acting on a collective vision if we are to secure the future that all people deserve.

If you haven’t yet registered for the Race and Power Summit, you have until the deadline on November 15! We look forward to seeing you there!
In solidarity, Race and Power Planning Team
