A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** DEAR NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Another interesting week from Lansing… The State of Michigan Stay Home/Stay Safer policies & procedures will now continue until 5/28 to ensure our citizens are safe. Last Thursday’s announcement of those returning to the workforce included residential & commercial builders, real-estate offices, boaters (including both commercial & recreational fisherman), gardening & landscapers, golf courses (now available with Carts, 1/ to a cart), manufacturing businesses & those supporting first responders.
Please know, our #1 goal at the City continues to keep you & our community as safe as possible. Thank you for all those that have contacted me directly (via text, cell, or email) to ask questions & express your views … I encourage & look forward to additional contacts this week.
In response to citizens’ requests for timely communications, I’ve conducted two virtual Town Halls over the last month. Citizens have asked that I keep this open dialogue, so the next Town Hall is scheduled for May 28^th (7 PM). Due to the many community-wide questions, I’ve also invited Bob Nix (Township Supervisor) to join me.
GOOD NEWS (and knock on wood) – the City of Northville has not had a confirmed COVID-19 case since April 23^rd, almost three weeks ago! Since that time, Northville has remained at 35 citizens infected, with 4 deaths. Other COVID-19 stats:
* On a statewide basis, since the first 2 cases on March 10, Michigan’s number has grown to almost 50K, with over 5,000 deaths. Nationally, the U.S. has close to 1.5 Million infected & over 80K deaths.
* A good-news factoid – analyzing COVID-19 case data since March 20^th, Beaumont Hospitals now have the lowest numbers recorded across their entire network (since they started compiling).
* Now the work begins for all of us to do our part: Businesses, Personal, Institutions & Civically.
While the City’s infection rate has dropped to zero, COVID-19 continues to disrupt our health, economy, our home lives, education, civic activities & our businesses, as well as impact our social & religious institutions. As I walk & drive our town, I ‘m encouraged to see citizens wearing masks & adhering to social distancing – we all appreciate that, and we continue to do it out of respect for others around us. More importantly, our continued vigilance will help minimize the threat of any second outbreak.
As I’ve said with each weekly letter, we’ll look at life differently going forward, as it relates to our work environment, socialization, gatherings & personal spacing. My commitment to you is to continue to be transparent while keeping all Northvillians connected & safe. Communication has been key!
ON ACTIONS….
* I continue to urge people to stay home (except for walks for mental & physical well-being and needed errands). Importantly though, continue to stay close digitally through your phone, facetime, Zoom-type meetings, emails and/or text messages with those you know & love.
* Locally, our DDA (Downtown Development Authority) recently communicated several relevant updates:
+ Many of the annual summer events held in downtown have been canceled or postponed this summer due to the COVID-19 virus, including the cancellation of the Memorial Day Parade and Arts & Acts.
+ The Northville Spring Flower Sale WILL be held May 22-23 and has moved down to the Farmers' Market location.
+ Final decisions haven’t been made yet for the Wednesday & Friday Night concerts, SpectrumFest, Tunes on Tuesdays, and other events, but I’m fully supportive if we can work within the Governor’s directives and the CDC’s policies & procedures.
+ The decision to move forward, modify or cancel these events will be determined, in part, by the States re-opening plans for Michigan. We remain optimistic.
+ Northville will have more Curbside Service Parking – On March 16^th, the Governor’s Executive Order prohibited restaurants from serving on-site, but did allow them to be open for delivery, carry out, or curbside service. Four parking spaces, two on E. Main & two on N. Center, were quickly installed for downtown restaurant owners. Last week, the Governor updated her Executive Order to allow retailers to open up for curbside pickup. The DDA has now expanded the number of spaces designed for restaurant/retail curbside pick-up by adding 5 additional downtown locations.
* Some of you may have recently received a mailer from U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens, outlining the benefits that the Coronavirus Aid, Relief & Economic Security (CARES) Act brings to Michigan:
+ For Families & Workers – A direct cash payment of $1200, phasing out at $75K per individual & $150K for a household. Secondly, the extension of unemployment benefits by adding $600 in federal funds per week to existing state-level unemployment checks. CARES also limits evictions for renters and foreclosures for Michigan homeowners.
+ For Our Seniors – Provides meal delivery & nutrition services for older Michiganders & individuals with disabilities. It also provides tax relief by eliminating the tax on those who elect not to take the Required Minimum Distribution from their retirement accounts.
+ For Our Health Care – Invests nearly $200 billion (nationally) in our hospitals, health systems, and health research, plus expanded funding for personal protective equipment for our health care workers. It also ensures COVID-19 testing is covered by all private insurance plans without cost-sharing.
DON’T FORGET TO COMPLETE THE 2020 CENSUS …
Our Census 2020 response rate continues to improve, now at 77.4% for the City vs. SE Michigan @ 68.7%, Wayne County @ 59.9%, and Oakland County @ 73.3%. The City’s response rate for the 2010 Census was 80.6%, let’s beat that! You can respond online, by phone, or by mail. What’s at stake – funding from 132 Federal departments for infrastructures, education & more.
So, in Conclusion, on the COVID-19 Situation …
* Regarding Northville City Operations: Senior Transportation Services, Essential Businesses & First Responders activities continue to remain uninterrupted. We’ll continue to coordinate efforts with surrounding communities – especially with our Northville Township partner. Additionally, I’d like to again thank our local Health Care Workers for all they’re doing.
* In this time of “Stay Safer/Stay Home”, our first responders have volunteered their time for festive parade-type drive-byes to uplift us during these extraordinary times. These have taken place on neighborhood streets in celebration of citizen milestones that could no longer be held as planned gatherings. Whole neighborhoods have enthusiastically come out (Using social distancing (CDC guidelines), of course) to show their appreciation.
* I encourage you to continue to support your local businesses in Northville – the survival of your favorite stores is dependent on our patronage NOW. The added pick-up/delivery parking spaces in downtown for both our restaurants & our retailers should help everyone.
* FARMERS’ MARKET Opening day will be May 14^th! My wife takes off for opening day… and that’s not for the Tigers! We will be there for the event!
* Very importantly, I continue to thank you for your support of our local Northville Civic Concern.
* In conclusion, I continue to encourage you to reach out & check-in with our seniors, your family members, friends & others who are part of your lives.
Please continue to share your Time & Talents with those around you in this community as we work through this Extraordinary Time… Together!
Be Safe ... and continue to Keep that Northville Faith! Stay #NorthvilleStrong!
