First, turn in your ballot ASAP
There’s less than a week left until Tuesday, November 5, the final day to vote in the 2024 general election.
We have everything you need to easily make an informed decision, including the Blue Voter Guide, on our Vote page. Read about candidates and propositions from your state and City voter information guides, and find endorsements from organizations you trust, including our own No on Prop 36.
If you’re planning to mail your ballot, make sure you put it in the mail by Monday, November 4, so that it will be postmarked timely. Otherwise, we recommend putting your ballot in a drop box or delivering it to a polling place or the City Hall voting center.
And remember: SIGN THE RETURN ENVELOPE! If you don’t, the SF Department of Elections will have to contact you before your ballot can be counted. 115 people have made this mistake already.
Also: Sign up for ballot tracking at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov. You’ll get a text message or email when your vote gets counted.
Second, help get out the vote
We also need to talk to voters who haven’t yet cast their ballots and encourage them to do so as early as possible, whether by mail or in-person. The Bay Area Coalition and other organizations have phone banks, text banks and more, both virtual and in-person, to fit any schedule, plus canvasses every weekend. You can find these opportunities on our Vote page as well.
There are also numerous in-person canvassing opportunities, some with transportation and stipends—so snap them up while you still can.
And, now is the time to talk to your friends and family about voting. If you have loved ones still supporting Trump, we have a guide from 2018 on how to handle thorny political topics around the kitchen table. It’ll also be helpful for the holidays coming up. Read our updated blog post on Talking To Friends And Family About Trump.
Third, take a breath
A lot of us are feeling some election anxiety as the last day approaches. You might be, too.
We should take care to remember that there’s a big difference between this election and 2016: A whole lot of grassroots volunteers like us are getting the vote out and looking out for each other.
We’re building a Blue Wave that can wash Trump into irrelevance, elect the nation’s first Black woman president, and give her a Congress that can keep the Biden-Harris Administration’s record of progressive wins going strong.
Take a breath. Feel what you’re feeling. And let’s keep up the work through this Tuesday, November 5.
We won’t necessarily know on Wednesday, November 6 how it went. It takes time to count votes accurately, and mailed ballots will still be wending through the postal system. Ignore politicians who try to claim victory prematurely; let’s protect the results that we worked so hard to earn.
We are planning to take next week off to decompress and process whatever happens. If we need to call for any sort of rapid-response action, we’ll send out a blast when that’s ready. Otherwise, we’ll be back on our regular schedule the following Wednesday, on November 13th.
