Responding to children’s urgent needs in Gaza and the Middle East

UNICEF and partners are on the ground delivering immediate relief and responding to the needs of children — addressing malnutrition in Gaza and the West Bank, scaling shelter in Lebanon and implementing preparedness measures in Syria and Yemen.

Protecting children from polio in Gaza
When the first case of polio in 25 years was confirmed in Gaza in August, UNICEF and partners had to act fast. Water and sanitation systems throughout the area have been severely damaged by conflict, and with instances of overcrowding, the conditions were set for the disease to spread. UNICEF responded swiftly for children on the ground. With partners, UNICEF successfully reached more than half a million children with the first round of a polio vaccination campaign.

Keeping dreams of a better future alive for students in Haiti
In Haiti, young girls and boys are finding their way back to the safety of the classrooms with UNICEF’s support despite the lawlessness and violence the country has faced. Currently, about 1.2 million children are in need of a quality education across the country. UNICEF and Education Cannot Wait in collaboration with other partners have created and implemented holistic and inlausive education programs to address the needs of children. For millions of children, this investment in their education provides an opportunity to return to class, graduate high school and prepare for a better future.

Providing aid to families and children impacted by floods in Bangladesh
Since unprecedented heavy monsoon rains inundated eastern Bangladesh, UNICEF has been showing up to help families and children recover. The floods have submerged homes, streets and fields, leaving 5.8 million people – including 2.3 million children – grappling with the aftermath. UNICEF is working to restore access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene, distributing 8.8 million water purification tablets and over 7,700 hygiene kits. UNICEF is also supporting the health care system, helping children under 5 and pregnant women get primary health care services. Despite these efforts, huge health challenges remain in Bangladesh.
