MCLA's Community Listening Sessions

MCLA completes another meaningful and empowering series of community listening sessions in Greater Minnesota

Willmar listening session

Listening Session in Willmar / Audiencia comunitaria en Willmar

During the fall, MCLA conducted three listening sessions in partnership with local community ambassadors, leaders, and organizations.

We visited Rochester, Willmar, and Moorhead. In each of this towns we had a great reception and engaging discussions with leaders and community members. In Rochester, we partnered with COPAL and ACHLA. In Willmar, Purpose Artisans and Woodland Centers helped us convene the participants in a gathering hosted by Spurs Bar and Grill. In Moorhead, young leaders who just founded a new Latine non-profit, C.A.S.A. did a fantastic job convening a very diverse group of members living in that northern city bordering with Fargo. All participants shared their experiences, challenges, and vision for their communities. In each one of them, it was not surprising to see that there are so many assets, talents, and ganas de echar pa'lante!

In addition, we conducted a survey to also capture the opinions of the larger community across the state.

We want to thank Light House Global, the Latina firm MCLA hired to help us design, facilitate, and gather the findings of our participatory research that will guide us in preparing our 2025-2026 legislative priorities. Also, a special recognition to our Council members Marta Castanon and Eusebio Pérez (CD7 and at-large, respectively), for being a part of the conversations and their ongoing representation and support.

And gracias to Annastacia Belladonna, Executive Director of Common Cause Minnesota, for sharing information and resources about the upcoming elections.

The bilingual report with final findings will be shared in November.

We want to thank all the participants for their meaningful contributions, solutions, and recommendations. Your voice is the soul of the legislative changes to build a more equitable and inclusive Minnesota.

Visitamos Rochester, Willmar y Moorhead.

Important Statement | Elections-Elecciones | Feedback | Grants

*MCLA's Statement: Unity over Division*

The Minnesota Council on Latino Affairs (MCLA) is charged with representing the diverse communities of Latino/as/es to the State of Minnesota. We have watched with growing concern during this election year the heated rhetoric targeting Latinos generally and immigrants, documented or otherwise, more specifically.

As election day grows closer, rhetoric is getting more abusive and vulgar. MCLA is here to say that based on evidence and scholarship, immigrants commit fewer crimes than native born residents. We reject the claim that foreign nations are sending violent criminals or the insane to the USA.

Rather, we know that immigrants are hard working people who are keeping Minnesota’s economy vital in our rural, urban and suburban areas. Our workforce participation rate is high and we are teachers, veterans, police officers, farmers, lawyers, construction workers, dairy workers, entrepreneurs, artists, physicians, nurses, chefs, line cooks, servers, and dishwashers.

In short, Minnesota works because we do, and every employer in the state knows this.

Lastly, we feel compelled to say that Puerto Rico is a beautiful place and Puerto Ricans are hard working and proud US citizens.

As election day approaches, MCLA asks everyone to tone down the rhetoric and recognize that as Americans we have more in common than what divides us.
