Capitalism is Cute

What to Know: Texas kids this summer are enjoying a freedom they’ve often been denied by silly city ordinances—operating lemonade stands.

The TPPF Take: Kids should be free to open their own lemonade stands.

“Through lemonade stands, child entrepreneurs learn about sales, marketing tactics, and the value of a dollar,” says TPPF’s Kaycie Alexander. “Learning these valuable lessons from a young age enables children to grow into financially stable hard workers.”

Innovation for Education

What to Know: San Antonio ISD will open two new specialized academies this school year, CAST Med High School and Young Women’s Leadership Academy Primary.

The TPPF Take: San Antonio is working to make its schools more versatile—and appealing to parents.

“San Antonio ISD is empowering schools and allowing parents to drive demand by choosing where to enroll their child,” says TPPF’s Emily Sass. “That's a win for the district, the school, and—most importantly—the students.”

Uninsured

What to Know: More than a million more Americans have dropped off the Affordable Care Act rolls, priced out of the market.

The TPPF Take: The Affordable Care Act was supposed to fix the problem of the uninsured; instead, the ACA has made the problem worse.

“Sharp increases in premiums have made health insurance unaffordable for millions of Americans,” says TPPF’s Rob Henneke. “And for millions more, the high deductibles have kept families out of doctors’ offices. The simple fact is that the ACA has failed. That’s why Congress should allow the states to seek their own solutions.”
