Check out what happened at the powerful Africa Week of Action Against Water Privitization

Friend,
Whether you live in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, or Lagos, Nigeria, I’m willing to bet that you want your family, friends, and community to have access to safe water. But far too often corporations seeking to control water systems for a profit threaten that access.
That’s why last week our longtime partner, Corporate Accountability and Public Participation Africa (CAPPA) convened the fourth annual Africa Week of Action Against Water Privatization with the Our Water, Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC). The week of action built power and uplifted the demands of communities across the continent.
And you were part of making it all happen. Many of the actions and activities that happened throughout the week were made possible by Corporate Accountability’s Movement Solidarity Fund. The fund was established just a few years ago to share and move financial resources to organizations and liberatory social movements that are dismantling corporate power and reclaiming people’s sovereignty in the U.S. and around the world.
This year’s week of action featured a region-wide press briefing that garnered media attention across the continent and a social media campaign that highlighted OWORAC’s shared demands. The week also included targeted in-country actions that included community parliaments, direct engagement with decision-makers, a journalist training, and media blitzes. Here’s a little more of what that looked like:
Through CAPPA’s community parliament in Lagos, community members secured a pledge from local water officials to address critical water accessibility issues within the next 6 months. In Ghana, partners held a press briefing calling out illegal mining activities and the resulting impacts on water accessibility and quality, and uplifting community demands for economic reforms, environmental protections, and political accountability. Advocates in Cameroon also held a youth education event calling for the prioritization of public welfare over private profits.
The Our Water, Our Right Africa Coalition (OWORAC) continues to raise its profile as a continent-wide movement taking a stand against water privatization among communities, decision-makers, and corporations alike.
I hope you’ll support this critical movement as Corporate Accountability continues to collaborate with the coalition to deepen its impact through solidarity and partnership. Donate now to power this growing force, and much more!
