Computers, tablets and smartphones are complex devices that often come with a high price tag. With such a significant investment, consumers want to be confident that they’re protected against any defects. Fortunately, all new, and some used, electronic devices come with a manufacturer’s warranty.

Consumer Action has created a brief new video, “Computer, tablet and smartphone warranties: What you need to know,” to help consumers understand and assert their warranty rights when dealing with defective or malfunctioning devices and make informed choices about optional extended warranties and device insurance.

Viewers will learn:

  • What a typical manufacturer’s warranty covers
  • What to be aware of when offered an optional extended warranty
  • How federal and state warranty laws protect consumers
  • The status of the fight for the “right to repair”
  • What next steps consumers can take if they are dissatisfied with the outcome of their warranty claim
  • Where to report warranty rights violations
  • Where to find more information or get help

Available in English, Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean, you can watch the video on Consumer Action’s YouTube channel. (While you’re there, please subscribe.)

The video is based on our multilingual fact sheet “Computer, tablet and smartphone warranties: Understanding and exercising your rights,” available for free download on the Consumer Action website.

The new videos, publication, train-the-trainer webinar and related work have been made possible by a grant from the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment.
