Some of the folks I'm talking to don't understand.
They say, "the government is on the ground. The NGOs are helping. What's the problem in Western North Carolina?"
These people don't understand the realities, or how bad the disaster is, or how little the government has helped.
As private citizens and groups like Samaritan's Purse are the main relief and recovery engines, the Federal government is nearly nonexistent.
Worse, to the extent it's even there, it's only in the city of Asheville, which is highly liberal. The more conservative parts of Western NC- which is the great majority- are suffering from neglect.
This account from a Western North Carolinian speaks volumes.
He goes on:
But most of all, I'm just heartbroken and I don't know what else to do. Feel like I've given everything I can give, but it isn't enough.
We need help. Bring your backhoes, your dump trucks, your chainsaws, your humility, your empathy, your kindness.
Many of us are used to seeing a Florida-like response to Katrina-like disasters. But many- especially in the Biden/Kamala regime- do not recognize this as a Katrina-like disaster.
Without a functional government response by the Democrat-run state government or the Democrat-run Federal government, these people are left to fend for themselves, with whatever the private community can provide.
It's not just big things.
It's roads, it's water, it's power- it's all the little things most of us take for granted.
Many people had their homes washed away and are STILL homeless two weeks later.
The Federal government response has alternated between being chaotic and incompetent.
The state has been worse. The Democrat Governor, Roy Cooper, knows the GOP needs Western NC to win statewide- so he has done everything he can to cruelly ignore or crush the people suffering in the mountains.
This is partisanship taken to an extreme I can't believe is happening in America in 2024.
While the good people of Western NC ABSOLUTELY want to express their displeasure at the ballot box, many cannot due to the challenges I mentioned above.
The good news is that much of NC is voting strong and voting early for Republicans. That's good.
The bad news is that Western NC is lagging behind, and if you look at those counties, you see that turnout is down, and that the turnout is down especially in the more Republican areas.
The Dems have been pulling shenanigans to prevent the people of Western NC from voting this whole time. I'm convinced it's intentional.
