In case you have to wait in line at the polls, here’s a round-up of some of the news coverage our work has earned over the past few weeks:

Peggy Shepard was featured on Spectrum News NY1 anchor Cheryl Wills’ In Focus ([link removed]) program, talking about the Biden administration’s track record on environmental justice along with New York City’s environmental justice report.

Peggy was also invited to speak as part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s announcement that it has lowered its dust lead standard to virtually zero, since there is no safe level of lead for humans. She was quoted in stories by the Associated Press ([link removed]) , United Press International ([link removed]) , New York Times ([link removed]) , Washington Post ([link removed]) , Guardian ([link removed]) , CBS News ([link removed]) , PBS News
([link removed]) , USA Today ([link removed]) , Chicago Tribune ([link removed]) , Toronto Star ([link removed]) , Fast Company ([link removed]) , Indianapolis Star ([link removed]) , EcoWatch ([link removed]) , and others.

Arizona is all-too-familiar with the challenges of extreme heat, so it was a bit of surprise when journalists from the Arizona Republic, which is based in Phoenix and the state’s largest newspaper, asked Annie Carforo to take them on our East Harlem heat tour. The main Arizona Republic ([link removed]) article features a 3-minute video ([link removed]) in which Annie describes the ways in which environmental racism impacts East Harlem. Parts of the tour were also used in a photo essay ([link removed]) the journalists did on how New Yorkers cope with the heat. And the article was picked up by USA Today
([link removed]) and Yahoo News ([link removed]) – the latter of which also featured the video ([link removed]) .

Caleb Smith co-authored an Op-Ed in City Limits ([link removed]) on the Right to Cooling Bill, which would help reduced the deadly impact of extreme heat in New York City. They were also quoted in a blog post about a new research project on indoor heat in Northern Manhattan and the South Bronx being conducted by the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health ([link removed]) , which was also picked up by Australia’s Mirage News ([link removed]) .

A Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health ([link removed]) study co-authored by Lonnie Portis examined electrical, elevator, heat, hot water, and water outages impacting New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents. The study, which was published in the Journal of Urban Health ([link removed]) , was picked up by MedicalXpress ([link removed]) and has an interactive dashboard to track outages ([link removed]) .

Annie Carforo was quoted in a CBS News ([link removed]) story about the City’s efforts to address the threat of extreme storms as well as in a City Limits ([link removed]) article on the City’s preparations for future storms. Both articles showcased her work with CRUP, the Climate Ready Uptown Plan that we helped design to enable community members to be better prepared for extreme weather events.

Peggy Shepard was quoted in E&E News ([link removed]) , talking about the Biden administration’s record on environmental justice and how it’s unlikely that a Harris administration would reverse course on some of its shortcomings. She also spoke with E&E News ([link removed]) about what influence the White House Environmental Justice Council, which she co-chairs, may have on the administration.

As we continue to voice our support for the One Harlem campaign to keep Harlem affordable and halt Columbia University’s unchecked expansion, our members were featured in a CBS News ([link removed]) story along with a Columbia Spectator ([link removed]) article, and Cameron Clarke was quoted in the Indypendent ([link removed]) .

Many of our 2024 New York City Climate Week activities also made the news, with Peggy Shepard featured in City & State New York’s ([link removed]) coverage of its second annual Climate Justice Forum. The Columbia Spectator ([link removed]) also talked about our involvement in Columbia’s Power Uptown event, including Peggy and Briana Carbajal who both spoke at the event. Harlem World ([link removed]) shared all of our activities. And the Imperial College of London ([link removed]) even referenced our Out of Gas, In with Justice pilot as part of its round-up of events.

** Today: Attend Our Dirty Hydrogen & Carbon Capture Webinar

The unprecedented investments in the clean energy transition from the Biden administration are promising, but some of those vital funds are being funneled into what are known as “false solution” technologies. Held this evening, Tuesday, October 29th at 5:30 PM, this webinar will explore two of these technologies, hydrogen and carbon capture & sequestration, examining the harms they cause and how communities like ours can advocate against their adoption and siting. ** Today: Attend Our Community Land Act Town Hall

Join our fight for more democratic control over land use and development in New York City. As a member of the New York City Community Land Initiative, we are working to pass the Community Land Act ([link removed]) , which is a set of four bills designed to address the city’s housing affordability crisis by placing land in the control of Community Land Trusts and other nonprofit groups committed to community-driven development. Come to our town hall to talk and learn about exciting projects Bronx and Manhattan Community Land Trusts are pursuing, and hear from legislators about their work to pass the Community Land Act. Join us this evening, Tuesday, October 29th at 6:00 PM at the Julia De Burgos Latino Cultural Center, located at 1680 Lexington Avenue (at 105th Street).
