Jack, Trump’s record as a racist who has not only made racist comments against people of color but also racist decisions, is well documented and long standing, dating back to his career beginning in the early-1970s.
However, over the past eight years, news media continues to tiptoe around this fact and use softer language such as calling his rhetoric, and his past decisions as former president, and future plans as the potential next president “nativist,” “racially charged” and “divisive.” We, as a multiracial nation, as a multiracial democracy, cannot afford to normalize such behavior and views, especially when dealing with a presidential candidate who has already demonstrated and made clear how he would govern from day one. Sign this petition to urge the national news media, especially those covering politics, to call Trump a racist and call out his racism. | From calling Mexican immigrants coming to this country drug dealers, criminals, and rapists, to more recently perpetuating the false, unfounded claims that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio are eating pets, to even more recently when he repeated false and grossly exaggerated claims about undocumented immigrants of color in Aurora, Colorado, he has proved how he thinks, who he is, and how racist views are at the heart of his politics and core. 1, 2
We know why he does this: Trump’s racism, racist rhetoric and plans speak directly to the fears of his predominantly white base of voters who feel threatened by, and resentful of, the browning of America—the demographic revolution. And he knows it has worked for him before, and continues to work.
Although mainstream media is starting to cover his racism, it’s still usually coated in fuzzy language and they rarely if ever call him what he is: a racist. We are calling upon the national news media, from reporters to editors to leaders of media companies to call Trump what he is: a racist.
