Dear John,
The decision by billionaire and Washington Post owner Jeff Bezos to overrule his editorial board’s endorsement for President may prove to be one of the most historically consequential anti-democracy actions we have seen in America. It demonstrates that when our nation’s media is controlled by wealthy individuals with business interests, a free press and independent journalism can be easily suppressed. It also reveals the dangers of obeying in advance, which, as professor and historian Timothy Snyder describes, teaches power what it can do.
Jeff Bezos has delivered a gut-punch to the country that is especially wrenching for the brutality of its selfishness. One of the wealthiest people on the planet seems to have chosen his financial interests over his stewardship of a valued, iconic institution, and in the process, taught a terrifying lesson to those without his means, power, and influence.
His decision is also consequential because it shatters our confidence in the importance and power of major media organizations and our trust that their history of strength and courage would continue to hold, no matter what happens politically.
We have all witnessed the challenges of the past decade – anti-democratic actions in federal and state governments, a crushing pandemic, and a Supreme Court purposefully eroding civil and individual rights while creating a presidency no longer answerable to the rule of law. And for all his wealth and power, Jeff Bezos has now sealed his legacy as a person of cowardice.
The road ahead remains difficult, but we must be strengthened and inspired by those who demonstrate each day how they care deeply about our country and each other. We at LDAD are fortunate to be surrounded by individuals with an enduring passion for democracy and the rule of law, and we find inspiration in the work of those who have demonstrated a life-long commitment to making the justice system work for everyone.
One such example can be found in this Higher Callings podcast by attorney and former Boston Bar Association president Donald Frederico. Don interviewed LDAD co-founder and former two-term Massachusetts Attorney General Scott Harshbarger in a wide-ranging conversation that displays Scott’s life-long commitment to public service. The conversation weaves together themes from Scott’s life that will leave listeners feeling something we all need these days – hope.
Thank you for your dedication to maintaining our democracy. Please support our efforts by donating to LDAD and by sharing this email with your networks. As always, feel free to reach out to us at [email protected] if you may be interested in volunteering or if you wish to share your ideas.
