Friend: this pandemic has created the greatest economic catastrophe our country has seen since 1929.

While history is no predictor of the future, we should look to the past for inspiration to solve our current crisis.

This nation recovered from the Great Depression only through unprecedented strategic spending and mass mobilization of tens of millions of unemployed workers.

That’s why, along with Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, I’ve proposed creating a national Health Force.

This Health Force will create hundreds of thousands of jobs for people out of work and fill positions that are critical for community health, including contact tracers and case managers.

Once we tackle this pandemic, the Health Force will strengthen our healthcare system in the long-term too—supporting public health agencies that have been tragically underfunded for decades.

Just as community programs during times of crisis have done before, the Health Force has the potential to transform the lives of young people across the country, and also the communities they touch.

We need ideas as big as the challenge we face, and I believe the Health Force meets that test.
