John,

On Friday, The Washington Post published an opinion piece declaring they would not endorse a candidate in the presidential election for the first time in 40 years.

It was later reported that billionaire Jeff Bezos killed the endorsement. Some former and current Post staffers say Bezos’ business interests influenced the decision.

Bezos’ cowardly decision to capitulate to Trump’s fascist threats is alarming to say the least. For our democracy to function, the press must be free and political leaders shouldn’t live in fear of retribution for speaking their minds.

While The Washington Post capitulates to Trump, COURIER isn’t backing down: we can’t afford a fascist in the White House and we’re doing everything in our power to correct the lies and spread the truth in these final pivotal days before the election.

And, with your help, we can keep our reporting going following Election Day when Trump and right-wing bad actors are certain to use misinformation to try and steal the election.

You can read more about why The Post ’s non-endorsement is so alarming below, but if you support COURIER’s mission, can you chip in $25 now? [[link removed]]

John,

On Friday, The Washington Post announced that, for the first time in 40 years, it would not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

The outlet—whose slogan is “Democracy dies in darkness”—claimed an editorial shift as the reason for this decision, even as Donald Trump openly runs as a fascist, and polls show a historically close race.

We’ll unpack this more in a moment, but if you support COURIER’s efforts to call out legacy media for failing to defend democracy, can you chip in $25 now? [[link removed]]

It’s puzzling—and deeply disappointing—that The Washington Post , with its mission to defend democracy, would choose to roll over for Trump. Trump has threatened to jail reporters, revoke broadcast licenses from networks that criticize him, and even demanded that NBC News be investigated for “treason.”

This is fascism 101. Trump is trying to intimidate and silence any media that dares to hold him accountable.

Yet, in this climate, The Washington Post has chosen to stay silent. It’s pure cowardice, happening even as their own journalists face increasing threats of violence from Trump’s relentless demonization of the press.

36% of journalists now report harassment or violence on the job, especially at Trump rallies where hostility toward the press is encouraged.

As Americans head to the polls, what message does it send that one of the nation’s most respected newspapers won’t stand against the creeping fascism threatening a free press?

While The Washington Post capitulates to Trump, COURIER remains resolute: our democracy cannot afford a fascist in the White House.

In the days ahead, we’ll continue our fearless, factual election coverage—and we’ll be here for the fallout, too. We won’t back down, because we believe in a press that holds leaders accountable and tells the truth. If you do too, chip in $25 or more to support COURIER today. Together, we’ll keep fighting for democracy. [[link removed]]
