On October 18th, the government of Manitoba joined Newfoundland and Labrador in signing a National School Food Program agreement. Manitoba will receive $17.2 million over the next three years to ensure that children and youth get healthy meals starting this coming school year 2024-2025.
Premier Wab Kinew spoke of the immediate benefits to kids and teachers this year and highlighted that school food programs also had many long-term benefits, saying that âthis is one the most consequential public policy interventions in recent Canadian history.â

The Coalition for Healthy School Food welcomes this announcement. Over the next few weeks and months, we expect more provinces and territories to sign agreements with the federal government and to expand their provincial and territorial school food program commitments.

The success of the National School Food Program and Policy campaign was highlighted during the Annual Symposium on Canadaâs Growing Food Insecurity Crisis ([link removed]) on October 16th.
Debbie Field, National Coordinator of the Coalition for Healthy School Food, joined Neil Hetherington of
Daily Bread Food Bank ([link removed]) and Rabia Khedr of Disability Without Poverty ([link removed]) to provide "Updates from the Frontlines".
Over 160 people from diverse backgrounds attended the event and heard presentations on provincial action on food insecurity including an update from the Premier of Newfoundland & Labrador, the Honourable Andrew Furey, and panels on building the movement for prescribing food in the US and Canada.

** Brent Mansfield ran

** an ultramarathon in BC
------------------------------------------------------------
Building on his past runs - 200 times around his school last October, and 200 times around the House of Commons in November 2023 - Brent Mansfield, a Vancouver elementary school teacher, ran around the front lawn of the BC Parliament Buildings ([link removed]) on October 16 (World Food Day).
Students from Victoria schools and supporters from the BC Chapter of the Coalition for Healthy School Food (BC-CHSF) ([link removed]) , including Flourish! School Food Society ([link removed]) and the Public Health Association of BC (PHABC) ([link removed]) , also took part in the event.
The run called on all parties in the BC election to support school food programs in BC.
Brent also urged the future BC government ([link removed]) to sign an agreement as soon as possible to ensure federal funds can support BC students in the 2024-25 school year.

Le 18 octobre, le gouvernement du Manitoba s'est joint à Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador pour signer un accord sur le Programme national d'alimentation scolaire (PNAS). Le Manitoba recevra 17,2 millions de dollars au cours des trois prochaines années pour veiller à ce que les enfants et les jeunes reçoivent des repas sains à partir de l'année scolaire 2024-2025.
Le premier ministre Wab Kinew a parlé des avantages immédiats pour les enfants et les enseignants cette année et a souligné que les programmes d'alimentation scolaire avaient également de nombreux avantages à long terme, affirmant qu'«il s'agit de l'une des interventions de politique publique les plus conséquentes de l'histoire récente du Canada. »
