Dear John,

I won’t mince my words here: Republican leadership’s failure to denounce hate speech and armed intimidation will only lead to more.

Rather than going to Lansing to start working on our state budget, help acquire PPE for our first responders and frontline workers, draft safe workplace requirements or fix our unemployment system, my colleagues and I went to Lansing for a partisan show.

This was a show that potentially jeopardized the health of my colleagues, Capitol law enforcement and staff, and encouraged some of the most vulgar and horrendous displays of racism, anti-semitism and sexism to be put on display at our Capitol.

Days like these show how important it is to elect representatives who will lead by example and denounce hate and fear-mongering.

What could have been a peaceful protest, turned into a brute force attempt to fearmonger and intimidate our legislature.

While armed men demanded that they be let into the House chamber where my colleagues and I were taking votes, the Republican Senate Majority Leader spent time mingling with and giving them his support.

(He only recently issued mild criticism for the displays of weapons.)

But this was not the first “protest” in Lansing with armed men waving the Confederate flag and holding up swastikas.  At the first event, Republican leadership waved American flags from the Capitol to encourage the crowd. We should not be surprised they returned, with more weapons and stronger statements of hate.

I, for one, am tired of this. Hate has no home in our community.  Armed intimidation has no place in our legislature.

We need leaders who will put Michiganders first, not stoke anger and put us in harms way. Will you contribute $15, $25 or $50 today to support my re-election campaign and send a strong message that it's time to end these games and hatred?

Sincerely,

Donna

We hope that you are well and healthy during this very difficult time. We have cancelled our in-person fundraising events until we can meet again safely, which makes email fundraising more important than ever. We know that not everyone is able to financially support our campaign right now, but for those who can, every dollar given will go directly to finding innovative new ways to communicate with voters. We won’t let this virus stop us from making positive change in Lansing, and we hope you’ll stick with us however you can. Thank you for being a part of our team.
