John, The truth is that we haven’t yet seen the full effects of COVID-19 on our communities, our health, and our economy. But what’s already clear is that the response from the federal government has been too little, too late, and too focused on big corporations -- leaving behind our small, local businesses, which are the backbone of our communities here in rural Iowa. PPP loans, which were supposed to help small businesses keep their employees on the payroll, went to massive chains like Shake Shack. After public backlash, some, but not all, companies have given back these funds, but that’s not the point. We must prioritize the regular mom and pop stores that employ over 650,000 Iowans -- not the companies that don’t pay federal income taxes, that focus on enriching their shareholders, and that increase their CEO pay instead of giving back to their workers. That’s why we need to raise our voices and demand that Congress invest in our country’s small businesses before it’s too late. Add your name to our petition calling for more relief for our small businesses in Congress’s next coronavirus response bill. When our country is ready to reopen, we need to ensure that our small businesses have the resources needed to open their doors too. Thanks for standing by our small, local businesses. If you can, order takeout from a local restaurant like J.D. is doing every Takeout Tuesday. Stay safe out there, Team Scholten |
