Friend—I wanted to make sure you saw this urgent email. We are mobilizing to stop Trump's administration from controlling what we post online, and we're preparing to run digital ads to sound the alarm about his internet censorship executive order. But we need to make some hard decisions about how much we can spend. Will you donate to help mobilize the internet to stop Trump’s censorship plan? Dear Friend, BREAKING: Donald Trump is preparing an executive order that would essentially end freedom of speech on the internet. A leaked draft of the order would give broad authority to the FTC and the FCC to censor political speech across the internet, including on Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.1 The Trump administration has floated controversial proposals like this before, only to back down later. With a big enough public outcry, we can stop this horrifying idea from going any further. Will you donate to help stop Trump's "Censor the Internet" Executive Order? The draft order would allow the FCC and the FTC to revoke free-speech protections under the Communications Decency Act of 1996, the law that allows websites with user-generated content, like forums and social media, to exist. It would allow the political appointees in charge of the FCC and the FTC—former Verizon lawyer Ajit Pai and former Rupert Murdoch lawyer Joseph Simons—to censor political speech on the internet that they deem unacceptable. It's terrifying to imagine what an authoritarian like Trump would do if he could control what's on Facebook and Twitter. But no matter who's in the White House, this proposed executive order would trample on our First Amendment rights and stifle free speech. Free-speech experts across the political spectrum say if the proposal goes into effect, the government would have sweeping new censorship powers. Our best chance to stop this plan is by organizing a major backlash RIGHT NOW to convince Trump to back away from the proposal. That's why we're mobilizing to stop this horrifying idea from going any further. Will you donate to help fight back? Yes, I'll donate to help stop Trump's "Censor the Internet" Executive Order.
