Senate Republicans announced they won’t extend special protections for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence while we battle the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is horrifying.
We have already seen a spike in domestic abuse rates across the country, and right here in Washington, due to social distancing – for many, home is just not safe.
Republicans are playing dirty and it’s going to get people killed. We need an immediate surge in grassroots support to show that Washingtonians do not support Republicans putting politics over people.

Our member, Senator Manka Dhingra, issued the following statement in response to this reckless move by WA Republicans:
“I am shocked that my Republican colleagues in the Legislature are playing politics with the lives of some of the most vulnerable people in our society….(this) allows survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and stalking to file protection orders electronically and allows courts to legally notify respondents electronically. These measures are not about convenience; they are about saving lives.”
Let us be clear: this is not your typical partisan disagreement. This is not a proposal which will exhaust the state’s resources. This simply allows victims to file for protection electronically while our courts remain closed during COVID-19.
Not extending this protection is just cruel.
