Hey John, Georgia is a key battleground in this year’s election, so we wanted to provide a quick update on where things stand in critical state legislature races. First, the good news: Since early voting began, Georgia has seen record-breaking turnout — more than 1.4 million votes were cast in the first week alone, a fifth of the state’s voting population. Now, the not-so-good news: Georgians are still voting on an unfair congressional map that gives Republican candidates a significant advantage — a map that was drawn up by, you guessed it, the Republican-controlled general assembly. The path to fairer maps in Georgia runs through the state legislature, so the NDRC has endorsed 29 Democracy Defenders who are running for the Georgia House of Representatives. Below are three Democracy Defenders who have a strong chance to flip state house seats from red to blue in the Atlanta suburbs. If you’re ready to send support for candidates like them — and for our comprehensive efforts to fight for fairer maps in Georgia and across the country — contribute $10 or more to the NDRC right now >>
Michelle Kang is running for Georgia’s 99th state house district — with a real chance to flip the seat blue. A first-generation Korean-American and small business owner, Michelle wants to lower housing costs, protect reproductive freedom, and create jobs and job training opportunities for families in her district. Her opponent, a first-term Republican incumbent, believes abortion should be illegal. No thanks! In Georgia’s 48th state house district, Laura Murvartian is running to unseat another Republican incumbent. Laura is a business executive and nonprofit leader who moved to the U.S. at age 8. She prioritizes defending reproductive rights, enacting smart gun control, making health care more affordable, and ensuring the economy works for working people. And finally, Susie Greenberg is running in Georgia’s 53rd state house district, challenging a Republican incumbent in what’s been called the “most flippable” seat in Georgia's state house. Susie’s platform centers on restoring reproductive freedoms in Georgia, creating safer communities and stronger public schools, ensuring access to quality, affordable health care, and strengthening the economy for all Georgians. Georgians would be fortunate to have Michelle, Laura, and Susie representing them in the state house — more champions for our democracy who would move Georgia closer to electoral maps that truly represent the will of the people. Thanks so much for staying engaged in state-level races like these campaigns for the Georgia House of Representatives. These elections may be smaller in size, but they’re also often decided by smaller margins. And when the stakes are this high, that means your support can go even farther in the fight for our democracy. Stay tuned for more updates, The NDRC team
