I am writing to you today to ask if you can contribute to some excellent candidates running for state legislatures. But first, I would like to take a moment to say why your support is so important.
Here is the truth:
State legislatures have a tremendous influence over our daily lives. All across the country, Republican-controlled chambers are working to undermine Medicaid, the right to vote, and a woman's right to make decisions about her own body.
That is why we must elect progressive candidates who will represent our movement at the state level. Because the truth is that real change never happens from the top on down — it happens from the bottom on up.
I am proud to support these state legislative candidates, and today I'm hoping you'll join me. Any amount you can give will make a big difference in these races.
Summer Lee is a state representative in Pennsylvania who is fighting for workers' rights, environmental justice, and social justice. As a supporter of Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, and a $15 minimum wage, she is an important voice for our movement in Pennsylvania. Right now she is facing a tough primary and needs our support.
Nikil Saval is a community activist and leader who is running for the Pennsylvania State Senate. He has taken on luxury hotel developers to fight for the rights of housekeepers, and he helped win back 1,000 jobs for cafeteria workers after budget cuts to the Philadelphia School District resulted in layoffs. He is someone we can count on to fight for working people.
Justin Bamberg is a state representative in South Carolina where he served as a state co-chair of our campaign for president. He supports college for all, Medicare for All, and reforming our criminal justice system. He is widely regarded as a progressive voice in South Carolina and we must ensure he will continue to represent our movement there in the years to come.
Wendell Gilliard was a community organizer for the United Steel Workers of America and local union president before being elected to the South Carolina State House. As state representative he has fought for economic justice, educational opportunity, and criminal justice reform. With a primary opponent and an election next month, he is counting on our support to defend his seat.
Mike Gianaris is a New York State Senator who has taken on powerful individuals and corporations, including blocking Amazon's massive tax break proposal. As the son of immigrants, he understands that too many people are working longer hours for lower wages and are struggling to afford housing, health care, education and food. We must keep him fighting for working people in New York.
Jessica Ramos is a New York State Senator whose district is the epicenter of New York City's coronavirus outbreak. She knows firsthand that people of color and low-income people are disproportionately impacted, and she has led the charge for economic relief for struggling families. She stood with us as a state co-chair of our campaign, now we must stand with her as she faces a primary opponent.
Julia Salazar ran for New York State Senate as a democratic socialist against a long-term machine incumbent and won. She has been on the frontlines of fighting for social justice in New York, from organizing for workers' rights to demanding criminal justice reform. Now she is running for re-election for her second term to keep building a more just New York.
Roslyn Ogburn is a progressive activist and organizer who is running for the Michigan House of Representatives. If elected, she will fight for working families, environmental justice, and the right for everyone to receive a quality education. She is up against a Democratic incumbent who has been widely denounced for pandering to the Trump administration.
Megan Green is running for the Missouri State Senate and currently serves as alderwoman in St. Louis. As a progressive leader in Missouri, she has fought for a higher minimum wage, reproductive rights for women, and marijuana legalization. If elected to the State Senate, she will fight for Medicare for All, college for all, and a Green New Deal.
These are the kind of candidates we need in office to continue our fight to transform this country. Together we must create a new America — a more just America — with a government and an economy that works for all of us, not just wealthy campaign contributors.
I understand that right now times are tough and you may not be able to afford a contribution. If you are financially able, I hope you will consider making a contribution to their campaigns today.
There is much work to be done to finish what we started together, and the truth is that none of it will be easy. But one important way we must continue to grow our movement across the country is by standing with candidates who will fight for our progressive agenda.
