Team —
First, Donald Trump announced that he was going to make a speech at the West Point commencement ceremony completely disregarding the fact that it would mean putting 1,000 of our future military leaders at risk by bringing them into the coronavirus epicenter in New York.
Then, this team immediately sprung into action. We’ve mobilized tens of thousands of veterans to speak out against his selfish action. Senator Tammy Duckworth and Representative Ted Lieu both used their platforms to join us in condemning Trump on this issue. We outplayed him on his own field when we took him to task on Twitter and ran ads on Facebook raising awareness of his actions.
Now, we have to keep going. He still hasn’t canceled his appearance and every day he grows hungrier for the empty applause from a crowd to soothe his ego. He has shown — time and again — that all he thinks our military and service people are good for is being used as political pawns to bolster his image.
There’s a reason Donald Trump has VoteVets blocked on Twitter. There’s a reason he has wielded his power as Commander-in-Chief to punish those who try to hold him accountable to the position he commands.
He cannot stand accountability — and knows that our community of veterans, military families, and allies of our movement will never stop fighting for our country.
