PRESS RELEASE: August 15th, 2019

POLL: Voters want Miami-Dade College to shut down the Confucius Institute

By a 4 to 1 margin, voters want the Chinese regime institute closed

Our poll of 1,300 likely voters in Miami-Dade County conducted on August 7-12, 2019 found that voters have strongly unfavorable views of the Chinese regime, with 63% calling for Miami-Dade College to shut down the Confucius Institute and 16% preferring to keep it open, an overwhelming 47 point margin. According to US intelligence, the Confucius Institute is a front for Chinese Communist Party propaganda, censorship, and manipulation.

Opposition to the Confucius Institute is strong across all parties and demographic groups. Our poll is consistent with Pew Research Center's findings that voters across the US have negative views of China and consider the country a threat.

"As China prepares to massacre Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, continues genocide against the Uighers, confiscates neighboring countries' territories, and escalates its economic war against the American People, this data shows that Miami-Dade College is wildly out of step with the community it serves, who do not want a foreign criminal regime to brainwash our young people. Miami-Dade College must stand with our community and also with our principles in solidarity with the people of Hong Kong who are fighting for freedom and democracy against the brutal Chinese communist dictatorship," said President Armando Ibarra.

Few issues generate such broad and strong opposition, and it is imperative that Gov. DeSantis, Lt. Gov. Nuñez, Sen. Rubio, and Sen. Scott take immediate action to ensure that the college does the right thing and closes the Confucius Institute to protect students and the academic integrity of our region's most important educational institution.

As demands for closing the Confucius Institute have heightened, the college has refused to stand with students and take action to protect them from Chinese regime propaganda, censorship, and manipulation. Provost Lenore Rodicio has served as Chair of the Confucius Institute Board of Directors at MDC and has defended the continued presence at the college of this Chinese Communist Party front.

This issue was front and center in recent weeks as the MDC Board of Trustees refused to select Provost Rodicio as the new college President, and instead voted to restart the presidential search process. The Board of Trustees will meet again on August 29th, and we urge them to vote to immediately shut down the Confucius Institute on campus.
