Dear friend,
I drafted this letter in the Tampa airport, headed back to Rhode Island to finish my race.
I’ve been to Florida because I think we can win this Senate seat.
1. The incumbent is unpopular. 2. We have good referendums on the ballot. 3. Florida Democrats are gaining momentum as they find each other. 4. Swifties. 5. Best of all, Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is a great candidate, already polling within the margin of error.
The big bad news in Florida is property insurance. It’s a crisis. And it’s caused by climate change. More bad news: it’s getting worse, and will start affecting mortgages and property values. The chief economist for Freddie Mac has predicted a full “coastal property values crash,” and Florida is out front, first and worst.
So it makes NO sense for Floridians to vote for climate deniers who try to scrub the word “climate” from official documents, or vote constantly against federal legislation that reduces carbon emissions. It’s even worse when that bad behavior, against the core economic interests of Florida, is for fossil fuel political money funding the Republican Party.
Rhode Island and other coastal states aren’t far behind Florida, so please make sure this issue is at the heart of your vote and your friends’ and acquaintances’ votes. Talk it up. Spread the word. Ping your contacts. By six years from now, when you next vote for this Senate seat, it could well be too late on climate. We’ve wasted way too much time already, and you’re now paying the price.

When we say this race is about the future, that’s a real thing for Florida. Thanks for helping.
