COVID-19 is challenging America’s electoral system in unprecedented ways, and immediate action is required to ensure that jurisdictions can conduct elections in ways that are safe, secure, and effective. Steps must be taken to help protect the democratic process and comply with public health guidelines so that every American can safely cast a ballot that counts, including an option for every citizen to vote by mail. Many veterans have significant experience with vote by mail. In the past several decades, millions of service members stationed overseas have voted by mail, a mechanism supported by bipartisan majorities of Congress. Given the COVID-19 pandemic, a vote-by-mail option must now be extended to all Americans. This is critical for older and disabled veterans who deserve the opportunity to vote safely from their homes. Please join the Center for American Progress for an online event with the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs, Sen. Jon Tester, as well as veterans Sen. Tammy Duckworth and Rep. Jason Crow.
