John,

On Friday, The Washington Post announced that, for the first time in 40 years, it would not endorse a candidate in the 2024 presidential election.

The outlet—whose slogan is “Democracy dies in darkness”—claimed an editorial shift as the reason for this decision, even as Donald Trump openly runs as a fascist, and polls show a historically close race.

We’ll unpack this more in a moment, but if you support COURIER’s efforts to call out legacy media for failing to defend democracy, can you chip in $25 now? [[link removed]]

It’s puzzling—and deeply disappointing—that The Washington Post , with its mission to defend democracy, would choose to roll over for Trump. Trump has threatened to jail reporters, revoke broadcast licenses from networks that criticize him, and even demanded that NBC News be investigated for “treason.”

This is fascism 101. Trump is trying to intimidate and silence any media that dares to hold him accountable.

Yet, in this climate, The Washington Post has chosen to stay silent. It’s pure cowardice, happening even as their own journalists face increasing threats of violence from Trump’s relentless demonization of the press.

36% of journalists now report harassment or violence on the job, especially at Trump rallies where hostility toward the press is encouraged.

As Americans head to the polls, what message does it send that one of the nation’s most respected newspapers won’t stand against the creeping fascism threatening a free press?

While The Washington Post capitulates to Trump, COURIER remains resolute: our democracy cannot afford a fascist in the White House.

In the days ahead, we’ll continue our fearless, factual election coverage—and we’ll be here for the fallout, too. We won’t back down, because we believe in a press that holds leaders accountable and tells the truth. If you do too, chip in $25 or more to support COURIER today. Together, we’ll keep fighting for democracy. [[link removed]]
