John, I’m going to tell you the same thing I told Oprah Winfrey on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010, because the words are just as true today.
In schools from Oakland, California to Newark, New Jersey, the children are calling to our conscience, asking us to flex our moral muscles and build them. They say five words that should change America every day and recommit ourselves.
They say liberty and justice for all.
Well, that’s not true. It’s an aspirational statement.
And we who drink deeply from wells of freedom that we did not dig. We eat lavishly from banquet tables set up for us by the sacrifices and struggles of our ancestors.
And now we — are we just going to luxuriate in all that’s America? Or are we going to realize that this nation has not finished itself yet, and we must return the blessings of our ancestors by showing the same sacrifice and commitment in getting in the game? Democracy is not a spectator sport.
Everybody has to be in the field, in the game, making sacrifices and struggles.
John, the story of America is ever-evolving and ever-changing. But its promise remains for those willing to push our country to live up to it.
So today, with voting underway across the country, do your part by making a plan to vote at iWillVote.com.
Let us continue the work at the ballot box of building the more just, loving nation that you and I know we can become.
With love and gratitude,
Cory
