Email from Rep. Hinson Friend, This week, I was honored to receive the U.S. Chamber’s Advocate for American Business Award for my work to support Iowa small businesses and pro-growth policies in Congress. Small businesses account for 99% of businesses in Iowa and employ more than 50% of the workers in our state. Small businesses are truly the backbone of our Iowa economy and the heartbeat of our communities across Iowa. Main Street business owners have poured their heart and soul into building their businesses – often turning what they once thought was a pipe dream into reality. I know they work so hard to empower their employees, serve customers, and give back to the community. We are heading toward an important inflection point for our federal tax policy, with key tax cuts set to expire next year. The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act provided tremendous opportunities for Iowa small businesses to grow and for working families to thrive. Democrats, including Vice President Harris, have promised to roll back these tax cuts, calling for a repeal of stepped-up basis and the expiration of the 199A Small Business Deduction – policies that many generational family farms and small businesses in Iowa need. These tax provisions are a critical tool to support rural economies and to help us compete globally against foreign adversaries like the Chinese Communist Party. That's why I cosponsored the Main Street Tax Certainty Act to keep these tax cuts permanent. There is never a good time to raise taxes, but the fact that Democrats want to raise taxes during this horrible inflation crisis is unconscionable. Our economy prospers when Americans can keep more of their hard-earned paychecks and have the freedom to thrive. I will continue to be a voice for Iowa’s Main Street job creators in Congress and work with anyone who will work with me to grow our economy. Best, Election Security Conversation with Benton County Auditor Hayley Rippel This week, I held a Facebook Live conversation with Benton County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, Hayley Rippel, on election security in Iowa. We discussed early and absentee voting as well as Iowa's election integrity measures that make it easy to vote and hard to cheat. Watch the full conversation here. Advocate for American Business Award I was honored to receive the Advocate for American Business Award from the U.S. Chamber. In Congress, I will continue to prioritize policies that foster business development, support our workforce, and cut government overregulation to ensure Iowa businesses can continue to thrive. Foreign Ag Land Ownership Roundtable with Sec. Mike Naig Iowa is home to the most productive and fertile soil in the world. I hosted a roundtable with Secretary Mike Naig and local farmers to discuss the importance of preventing the CCP and our adversaries from buying American farmland. Food security is national security. Policy Highlight: Supporting Female Veterans Veterans face immense challenges when returning home from service, particularly our female veterans. Far too often, they are afraid to speak up about their experiences and left feeling invisible, or that their service wasn’t worthy. That's why I am proud to work to empower our female veterans in Iowa and across the country. I have supported the bipartisan, bicameral Improving VA Accountability to Prevent Sexual Harassment and Discrimination Act to improve policies and oversight at the VA to crack down on harassment. Additionally, I helped implement and continue funding for the PACT Act, which was expanded to include breast cancer screenings and mammograms for veterans with potential toxic exposures. Earlier last year, I held a Facebook Live conversation with Iowa veteran, Christina Schauer, to discuss this legislation and our work to support veterans. If you missed the conversation, watch it here. We are forever indebted to our veterans for their service. I will continue to work to empower female veterans to share their stories of service, sacrifice, and bravery, and seek the health care and benefits they deserve.
