Even after 18 people were killed and 13 wounded in Lewiston, ME, our elected officials did nothing. Their inaction is directly responsible for the hundreds of gun violence deaths that have occurred since then.

Assault weapons are weapons of war and shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near our streets, schools, bowling alleys or restaurants. Yet Congress hasn’t made enough of an effort to ensure an assault weapons ban as the law of the land.

Friend, today marks the one-year memorial of the most deadly mass shooting in Maine's history.

When I think of people being gunned down in a restaurant and at a bowling alley — familiar places that should have been safe — I am filled with grief and rage.

Grief because everyone deserves to live free from gun violence. Grief for the community that will never be the same. Grief for the family of the shooter, who will spend the rest of their lives wondering what more they could have done.

Rage because this deadly massacre could have been prevented. Rage because there was a time when mass shootings were rare — but that has not been true in America for decades. Rage because there have been more than 420 mass shootings since Lewiston and our leaders have chosen to do nothing. Rage because an assault weapons ban is common sense for gun safety.

Far too many communities have suffered the same fate as Lewiston, but rampant tragedy and mass death should not be our norm. Americans deserve to feel safe in their daily lives. YOU deserve safety, friend.

As we remember the tragedy that took place one year ago today, I’m asking you to raise your voice for change. Please, will you add your name to our rapid-response petition calling for our leaders to take immediate action to BAN assault weapons for good?
