Two things you should know about the Arizona State Supreme Court race:
These state supreme court races typically fly under the radar — and Arizona is just one example of how consequential they can be. That’s why the NDRC is working across the country to elect fair-minded justices who will defend democracy and protect our freedoms.
Here’s what’s going on behind the scenes in the Grand Canyon State: Republicans are trying to lock in a deeply conservative state supreme court. Proposition 137 would get rid of term limits for high-level state judges and end retention elections — meaning, if it passes, it would take away the vote from the people retroactively. That means even if Arizona voters unseat these judges in November, their voices will be null and void if the ballot initiative passes. By the end of last month, conservative groups raised nearly half a million dollars to support these state supreme court justices — who were selected by former Republican governor Doug Ducey after he upped the court from five to seven justices. It’s plain as day what’s going on here: the GOP wants to pack the courts with radical judges and then take away the people’s right to object. John: The work we’re doing together is relentless. But your dedication fuels my belief in the work we’re doing to protect democracy. It's a joy and an honor to work alongside you. With gratitude, Ramona Morales P.S. Know someone in Arizona? Reach out and tell them that a “no” vote on Proposition 137 (End Term Limits and Retention Elections for Supreme Court Justices and Superior Court Judges Amendment) will allow their vote for this year’s judicial candidates to count. A “yes” vote will end term limits and most retention elections, permanently taking away voters’ voices on these important positions.
