Dear John,

In Southern California, burdensome regulations and taxes continue to raise the cost of living and push families out of the region. Meanwhile, open border policies threaten public safety and flood our streets with narcotics like fentanyl.

I will always fight for our Southern California community and the friends and neighbors who call it home.

Get the details about my efforts to fight policies which raise your cost of living and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and X to get these updates in real-time.

Fighting Higher Gas Prices in California

Between state and federal taxes, we as Californians are paying more at the pump than any other American. Governor Newsom and bureaucrats in Sacramento continue to pass regulations and taxes that make gasoline more costly for families. That means transportation to the grocery store, to visit family, and to get to work are all less affordable.

On November 8, Governor Newsom's California Air Resources Board (CARB) will vote to add new regulations that will raise the price per gallon by as much as 47 cents next year, without input from the families and individuals who will pay for it.

Californians cannot continue to stretch their budgets to appease Governor Newsom's left-wing state agencies. Today I led my fellow representatives from California in a letter to CARB demanding that the agency delay its November 8th vote to raise gas prices.

You can read my letter to CARB here and coverage of my efforts to fight for working families in the Los Angeles Times.

Service Academy Nominations

Applications for a Congressional Nomination to attend one of our nation's service academies are open until November 7th!

Attending a service academy is a great honor for students as well as our community, providing both an education and the opportunity to serve our country in the armed forces. Students who wish to attend four of the five service academies must be nominated by their member of Congress.

For more information on the application process and to get started, visit my website at steel.house.gov/services/military-academy-nominations.

Fighting Illegal Immigration and the Biden-Harris Border Crisis

The crisis at our southern border continues to cause havoc in our Southern California communities. In the last four years of the Biden-Harris administration, our country has seen over 10 million illegal immigrants at our borders, including over 2 million who have escaped from border patrol, nearly 400 people on the terrorist watchlist, and thousands of violent criminals. This crisis is in direct response to the Biden-Harris administration’s mishandling of our border.

I'm fighting for solutions to end this wave of illegal immigration. I supported H.R. 2 to secure the southern border and end the lawlessness we see today, which the Senate and President Biden have declined to support.

As an immigrant myself, I know that this country offers incredible opportunities, and I am proud to call myself an American. But people must come here through legal means, and we must have security in place to protect public safety.

Defending Taiwan on the Global Stage

As an ally of the United States, Taiwan's independence and security is critical to safeguarding democracy and the stability of the Pacific.

This week, under pressure from the Chinese Communist Party, the government of South Africa asked that Taiwan move its representative office from South Africa's capital city. This follows China's repeated aggressive maneuvers and attacks against Taiwanese and Filipino fishing vessels. Nations cannot be bullied by the CCP into silencing Taiwan on the global stage. The United States must always stand against the CCP's intimidation and aggression in the Pacific region.

This week I called on South Africa to stand up to the CCP’s intimidation campaign and allow Taiwan’s presence in the country’s capital to remain.

In Congress, I will always use my voice to speak out against acts of aggression from the CCP and other Communist regimes.

Gasoline price-hike issue: California Republicans in U.S. House demand delay in state board vote

"The Republicans accuse the board, known as CARB, of 'a failure to provide complete transparency' about consumer costs stemming from new environmental policies under discussion. The letter sent Thursday from the congressional delegation said the vote should be delayed so CARB can 'focus on analyzing and communicating its policies’ impact on consumers in our state.'”

South Africa asks Taiwan to move its de facto embassy from Pretoria

"China is South Africa's largest trading partner globally and one with which it is looking to expand cooperation in areas such as renewable energy. Taiwan's Foreign Ministry said that warming relations between South Africa and China were posing a challenge for its own friendly relationship with South Africa.
'If the South African government still insists on submitting to China and changing the status quo... the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will... study and formulate all possible responses in order to safeguard the sovereignty and dignity of our country,' it said in a statement."
